Emmaus Liturgy Celebration of our Individual Baptisms & Baptism of Jesus
Opening Song Send Down The Fire (Marty Haugen)
Chorus: Send down the fire of your justice, Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people, and make us the people of God.
1-Call us to be your compassion, teach us the song of your love; Give us hearts that sing, give us deeds that ring, make us ring with the song of your love. Chorus
2-Call us to learn of your mercy, teach us the way of your peace; Give us hearts that feel, give us hands that heal, make us walk in the way of your peace.
Chorus
3-Call us to witness your Kindom, give us the Presence of Christ; May your holy light keep us shining bright, ever shine with the Presence of Christ.
Chorus
A Call for being together in the Spirit
Pat:When we pass through the waters
All: God is there with us
Pat:When we suffer and feel hopeless, All:God is there with us..
Pat: When we are joyful and celebratory, All: God is there with us.
Pat: Whether we feel triumphant or defeated.
All: God is there with us, always
Come, let us worship together with Emmanuel, God within us.
Opening Prayer (please give attention to the commas)
Pat-Creator of the universe, we stand amazed at your power and glory.
Side 1-We are eager to worship you and offer our praise, but we are often reluctant to answer when we hear you calling our name.
Side 2- We sing our songs of tribute in the sanctuary amidst your trees and creatures, but shy away from the river, lest we be baptized with the fire of your Holy Spirit.
Side 1-Forgive us when we forget your promise to be with us always, O God.
Side 2- Renew us with the power of your ever-present love, and strengthen us to proclaim your justice throughout the world.
All: Amen.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
Victoria- 1st Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4;6-7
Here is my servant, whom I uphold my chosen one, in whom I delight! I have endowed you with my Spirit that you may bring true justice to the Nations. You do not cry out or raise your voice, or make yourself heard in the street.
So gentle that you do not break a bruised reed, or quench a wavering flame, faithfully you will bring forth true justice. You will neither waver nor be crushed until justice is established on earth, for the islands await your teaching!
Melva- 2nd Reading: Acts 10:34-38
So Peter said to them, “I begin to see how true it is that God shows no partiality– rather that any person of any nationality who fears God and does what is right (and makes mistakes) is acceptable to God. This is the message that God has sent to all people, the Good News of Peace proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is Savior of all.
You yourselves know what took place throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee with the Baptism John proclaimed. You know how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power and how Jesus went about doing good works and healing all who were in the grip of the devil because God was with him.”
Steve- Gospel: Luke 3:15-16; 21-22
The people were full of anticipation, wondering in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. John answered them all by saying, “I am baptizing you in water, but someone is coming who is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to untie! This One will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire”.
Ritual of Individual Baptism:
Pat: Let us put the sign of the Cross with water on each other’s forehead or hand as each would choose for themselves. And we say as we make the sign of the cross as Jesus is saying to each of us, “you are my beloved child, in you I am well pleased”.
JoAnn: Dialogue Homily- Some questions and/or thoughts for reflection:
I chose to use the three readings as they spoke to me of all creatures not only white, not only rich, not only educated, not only a particular gender. The creator is all inclusive and loves all creatures.
1-Water 💦 is life-giving.
2-Baptism is so connected to water and thus such a connection to creation, water is larger than the mass of the land on earth. All creation needs water to live.
3-Baptism in the early Church, was full immersion – a bit like drowning. As they went down into the water they felt as if they were dying and then, emerging, coming forth with new life.
4-What does Baptism mean in your life?
5-Has the meaning of Baptism for you changed over time in your life?
Pat: Prayer of the Faithful- Spoken with usual hand gestures
Pat: We remember John as we pass the basket: Please be as generous as you can be.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
All: On the night before he died, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to his friends saying, This is my body, broken for you.
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to his friends and said, this cup is the new covenant of my life’s blood shed for you; and as often as you do this, you do this in memory of me.
Acclamation-Sung
All: We remember how you loved us all your life.
And still we celebrate for you are with us here. And we believe that we will see you when you come, when you come again.
We remember! We celebrate! We believe!
Pat: Now, gathered at your table, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon all these gifts that they, and we, may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation.
Steve: In the fullness of time, bring us with all your saints from every tribe and
language, from every people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world.
Pat and Steve : (Holding up the bread and wine)
All: Thru Christ, With Christ, In Christ In union with the Holy Spirit
All glory and honor is yours Almighty God forever and ever.
Sing
All: Amen Siakadumisa 2x Amen, Bawo 2x Amen Siakadumisa
Amen we praise your name O God 2x
Amen sing praise, Amen sing praise
Amen we praise your name O God
Pat: Now together, as one community, we offer to you O God, our prayer, in the name of your beloved son and our brother, Jesus:
All: Creator, holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come. We pray that your good will be done. Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need. Give it to those who have none.
Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, from each one to each one.
Lead us to holy innocence beyond the evil of our days. Come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One.
Offering our Gift of Peace:
Pat: Let us offer one another a sign of our peace and love.
Invitation to Communion
Steve: Everyone is welcome to this table.
Our God, whom the universe cannot contain, is present to us in this bread. Our God, who redeems us and calls us by name, now meets us in this cup. So come, Beloved Friends, and take this bread, drink this wine. In them, God comes to us, so that we may come to God.
Communion
Pat: We invite everyone now to partake of this communion we share. (As the cup is passed, if you choose, please only dip the bread into the cup as there are lots of germs in the air.)
Communion Song: Jesus Christ, Inner Light (Sister Suzanne Toolan,RSM)
Jesus Christ, Inner Light, let not our darkness conquer us. Jesus Christ, Inner light, enables us to welcome your love.
Closing Song: City of God (Dan Schutte)
1-Awake from your slumber! Arise from your sleep! A new day is dawning for all those who weep. The people in darkness have seen a great light. The God of our longing has conquered the night.
Chorus: Let us build the city of God. May our tears be turned into dancing! For the Lord, our light and our love, has turned the night into day!
2-We are sons of the morning; we are daughters of day. The One who has loved us has brightened our way. The God of All Kindness, has called us to be, a light for God’s people to set their hearts free.
3- God is light; in God there is no darkness. Let us walk in God’s light, God’s children one and all. O comfort my people, make gentle your words. Proclaim to my city the day of her birth.
4-O city of gladness now lift up your voice! Proclaim the good tidings that all may rejoice.
