Emmaus Liturgy November 9th, 2025
DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TEMPLE OF GOD?
Pat: Ring the Singing Bell: Moment of Silence for us to Arrive
WELCOME/INTRODUCTION:
OPENING PRAYER
ALL: The leaves have turned to vibrant colors, reds, yellows, and golds and are falling to the ground. The air is cool now, ladened with moisture. More clouds are visible in contrast to the blue sky. The daylight is much shorter now and we are now experiencing Autumn. It is a time to slow down, a time we celebrate that for which we are grateful.
Today’s readings from the lectionary are drenched with the flow of water. They also emphasize Jesus’ awareness of his body as a temple of God and we are informed that we too are temples of God. So during our liturgy today, let us celebrate and be thankful for the rain we have already received, for the gift of water which is unique to our solar system, and without it the marvelous beauty of creation, including ourselves would not be here.
Let us acknowledge and be thankful for the bodies we have been given and honor them as sacred temples of God. They too are over 90% water. And how can we best use our body temples to resist hate and promote love. Blessed be all the bodies of water, creeks and streams, rivers and lakes, glaciers, oceans and seas and blessed be all bodies, all temples of God. Because we know we are all one body, the Body of Christ.
Opening Song: Have You Ever Seen Rain Creedence Clearwater Revival
Pat: Absolution:
Let us look inward and reflect on where we have fallen short, areas in which we can do better.
All: God Forgives us so we can forgive others and we can forgive ourselves.
1st Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
The angel brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing out from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the façade of the temple was toward the east; the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple, south of the altar.
He led me outside by the north gate, and around the outer gate facing the east, where I saw water trickling from the southern side.
He said to me, "This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah, and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh.
Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail.
Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9
All: The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress.
Therefore, we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea.
All: The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High. God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed; God will help it at the break of dawn.
All: The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
The LORD of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob. Come! behold the deeds of the LORD, the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
All: The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
Second Reading; 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
Brothers and sisters:
You are God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But each one must be careful how he builds upon it, for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.
All: Alleluia, alleluia.
I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord, that my name may be there forever. Alleluia, alleluia
Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesu went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.
Reader: Hear What the Spirit is Saying!
All: Thanks be to God
SHARED HOMILY:
Pat: One foot ground in our Christian Tradition but there are other places we must meet and stand.
Steve: What do we bring to the table. What do you want to pray for?
OFFERTORY SONG: Rain - the Beatles
Pass the Basket and Bring Up our Offering Gifts:
Steve:
We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these holy gifts, that these fragile earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our love and brother, Jesus Christ: who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to the table, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:
All: ’This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.’
Pat:
In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
All: ‘Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.’
Pat:
As on that night, so here and now Jesus offers himself in touch and taste beyond what words can hold. Great is the mystery of faith.
Let us proclaim the Mystery of Our Faith:
All: Dying you destroyed illusion
Rising you restored our union
Maranatha, come Lord Jesus
Alpha and Omega.
Through Christ and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours almighty Creator forever and ever. Amen
Pat: Now together, as one community, we offer to you O Creator, our prayer, received from our brother Jesus:
All: Mother, Our Father, holy and blessed is your true name.
We pray for your reign of peace to come. We pray that your good will be done.
Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, give it to those who have none.
Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, from each one. Lead us to holy innocence beyond innocence beyond the trials of our days.
Come swiftly Mother, Farther, come.
For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy:
Forever your Name is All in One.
Steve: The Gesture of Peace:
Deep Peace of the Running Wave to You
Deep Peace of the Flowing Air to You
Deep Peace of the Quiet Earth to You
Deep Peace of the Shining Stars to You
For those who are able and willing please stand and enter the center space and offer each other a gesture of peace. Hugs are encouraged.
