Last Friday we took part in a half day retreat centered around the practice of Ecospirituality. Kathy and Flavio, Maryknoll Missioners from Brazil, guided us through several thought provoking and challenging exercises. We laughed, we wrestled with the concept of Ecospirituality, we meditated and dreamed, and developed our own definition of Ecospirituality:

Discussed in small groups
By the end of the afternoon we had become one body united together in a web of warm kinship and bright green yarn.
Dan Vrooman was so inspired he wrote this lovely poem
The Arc of Light by Dan Vrooman
A hummingbird’s wing in morning gold,
a breath held in the earth’s deep hold —
the sky, a blue vastness, cradling sun and moon,
a dance of interdependence, ancient and new.
The wind through reeds, the insect’s hum,
the river’s song, the forest’s drum —
these are not distant, not apart,
but threads in the web of life’s heart.
Yet man‑made imbalance, a scar on the land,
a forgetting of sacred, shared command —
to bow to profit’s false, hollow god,
and break the covenant we were told.
But listen: the land speaks, the water breathes,
the arc of light that holds our days and nights,
a gentle cup, a sacred space,
where all beings, in all their ways,
are palmed within the same embrace.
Eco‑spirituality begins here, at home,
in the quiet recognition of the whole,
the web that binds us, root to crown,
the sacred breath of earth and sun.
